Hey! I’m Lara. 

My art practice centers around questions, emotions and points of friction in the ways we navigate existing as human beings. I like to sit in the uncertainty of everyday life and contemplate why we are here and why we all experience the world through such different lenses but can still ultimately connect with each other on a fundamental level.

The areas I enjoy exploring the most are the crossover areas in life. The intersections of personhood that are often untethered, unbalanced or overlooked, parsing through every shade of metaphorical grey until the lines disappear- focusing on the connections and overlaps rather than any final conclusion.

My work is full of reworked layers, moments of indecision, and collisions of structure with intuitive markings. You'll see vibrant colours that clash and balance simultaneously. Graphic line work paired with gestural brush strokes. Soft flowy motion that drips into rigid shapes and symbols.

I mostly work in digital illustrations but have recently been reconnecting to my love affair with painting (acrylics & oils) and graphite sketches.

You’ll find me constantly immersed in fictional places that simmer with the essences of the human psyche; diving between the layers of ancient folklore and mythologies, finding the warnings folded in with wondrous journeys. Wandering the halls of stories, chasing the light wonders and feasting on the dark realities. Reaching out to touch the spinning spools of dream thread of other like-minded creative people weaving tapestries of human connection and understanding.

 

The historical stuff:

I graduated from WINTEC in Hamilton, NZ in 2019 with a Bachelors in Visual Arts working predominately in Graphic Design. Though it would be remiss of me not to mention that I spent half my tertiary education studying Fine Art at Massey University in Wellington, as it strongly shaped my abilities in conceptual thinking and artistic integrity.

I owe the world to my grandma who, as incredible painter and craftsperson- lent her voice to some very important conversations and who vouched for my art career in the moments when it mattered the most. 
And also to my parents, who supported their fast-brained, hyper-interested, imaginative daughter as she bulldozed her way through every hobby, sport and activity under the sun. Who (despite a few well-placed hesitations) gave her the space and resources to follow her yearning artistic heart into the beyond and become the independent, creative human being that I am to this day.

 

I currently reside in Sydney Australia, living my intended life as a sun-lizard that feeds alcohol to grown adults (I work part time in a cocktail bar) and making art.
